Ying Shi

Hi, I am Ying Shi

Writing Seeking Happiness in Edmonton was a journey of self-discovery. It allowed me to revisit a winding journey marked by hope, disappointment, transformation, and ultimately, joy. Upon coming to Canada from China, I wanted to build a business and use a Canadian designation as a bridge to justify my immigration choice. But life unfolded differently.

Through failure and isolation, I was humbled. When I stepped into a LINC classroom filled with refugee students, I expected little. Instead, I received everything—raw human stories that shattered my assumptions and opened my heart.

As I gradually let go of the need for grand business success, I began to experience real joy in building trust, appreciating diverse cultures, serving others, and growing together.

Edmonton, once just a destination, became a character in the story, a quiet catalyst for healing, and a place where I’ve found greater meaning in life.

This story is my way of honoring that path.

This story could not have been told without a collective effort. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the 23 authors and 10 artists who contributed their voices through words and art. Special appreciation goes to our four volunteer editors, whose dedication and expert work made this book truly compelling. I am also deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the ECWC’s working committee and board. Finally, this year-long 2024-2025 project was made possible by the generous funding from the Edmonton Heritage Council, marking a meaningful addition to our city’s rich heritage.
